About the event
Join us for a full-day cultural exchange at the National Museum of Mexican Art on Friday, October 18, 2024, as part of Chicago Fashion Week, to explore the rich heritage of Mayan embroidery and artisanal techniques. This immersive event, in partnership with Muuch Creative, Antalika’a, and the National Museum of Mexican Art, will be led by Mildre Ramirez, founder of Antalika’a, a renowned expert in traditional Mayan craftsmanship.
As a highlight of Chicago Fashion Week, this event brings a unique cultural perspective to the fashion industry by celebrating the artistry and legacy of Mayan textiles. The day will begin with opening remarks and introductions, setting the stage for an in-depth journey into the world of Yucatecan cross-stitch, Xmaknité, and Deshilado—three iconic techniques that exemplify Mayan artistry. The workshops will delve into both the history and contemporary applications of these techniques, highlighting their evolution and significance within the cultural fabric of Mayan communities.
Throughout the event, participants will have hands-on opportunities to practice these techniques, guided by an expert instructor. Attendees will learn about the symbolism behind the stitches and their cultural significance, as well as how these traditions have been preserved and adapted over time.
Whether you are an experienced textile artist or simply someone with an appreciation for cultural craftsmanship, this event offers a unique chance to deepen your understanding of Mayan embroidery and its connection to heritage.
Lunch and breaks are included, providing time to connect with fellow attendees and reflect on the morning and afternoon sessions. With limited capacity, early registration is recommended.
